Over a month ago I had the pleasure of attending the launch night of Unify, a collective fashion studio formed to facilitate designers in advancing their career. Situated in the Carnegie Building off the Donegal Road, photographers, bloggers, designers and fashion followers alike turned out in force to get the inside scoop on the trendy new space.
Mingling, meeting the team, checking out the facilities on offer and of course sampling the free wine, the atmosphere was on a definite high as the project was explained with enthusiasm, excitement and what can only be described as genuine passion for what Unify is attempting to create.
A professional working environment for designers. Providing a studio environment, allowing designers to interact with one another. Enabling the designers to share ideas and learn from different ways of thinking and styles of design. With access to desk space, mannequins, sewing facilities, fitting rooms and with Pollini Fashions of Moira on board to lend a helping hand in providing shops and boutiques for designers to actually sell their designs, Unify really is the helping hand to kick-start young designers challenging careers in the right direction.
Fast forward six weeks and the fruits of their labour have finally been revealed in full at FBL's Waterfront Catwalk show and I can assure you it did not disappoint. As Unify's top design trio David Henderson, Sean Henry and Sinead Laverty all unveiled their Autumn/Winter lines for the first time, each showcasing 12 sensational looks to bring in the Autumnal season with a touch of glamour and high-fashion to boot. First to send their eye-catching creations down the catwalk was Sinead Laverty. Displaying a diverse line of the Autumn/Winter necessity that is the printed scarf. Perfect for the upcoming party season one might add, storming down the runway with a metallic patterned maxi dress to start with artistic and vibrant scattered prints shown throughout. Lilacs, greys, royal blues and dusty greens were all prominent with the oversized, quirky scarves taking casual or formal simple gowns to a new level in an instant. Then came talented knitwear and jersey designer Sean Henry showcasing his pieces from his ridiculously sophisticated 'Boy In the Striped Pyjamas' debuted back in September. With several new designs in the form of a camouflage influenced assortment of knitted dresses in a range of Turquoise and Navy shades. As ever, Sean Henry's ability to craft designs that literally emphasise ever aspect of the female form has not went unnoticed with cuts and silhouettes enhancing legs, chest, arms and waist at every opportunity. My personal favourites being the long-sleeved camouflage maxi dress featuring rope detailing and an army overlay turquoise cocktail dress. Leaving the eccentric and colourful creations of David Henderson to close the show on an all-time high of creative and innovative proportions. As gothic and fantasy inspired dress after dress rocked the runway as rock chic met hardcore glamour with harsh, dark and rustic features dominating with an emphasis on the waist and legs. While strapless gowns in a mix of faux leather and organza, showcased a feminine focus with quirky evening-wear coming out on top.
