True-crime novelist Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) moves his family across State in the hopes he can finally finish his next top-selling book. A novel focused on shedding light on the strange disappearances of four children and the murder of their respective families. Things begin to take a sinister turn however as Ellison discovers tapes seemingly filmed during all of the murders, unveiling a terrifying revelation leaving Ellison to also uncover how the tapes found their way to the attic of his new home. The home that just so happens to be where the most recent murders took place.
Directed by Scott Derrickson, Sinister is a psychological horror combining the use of 'found footage' with traditional cinematography. Right from the opening credits this film reels you in with a freakishly haunting Super 8 clip of a family of four dangling by their necks from an old tree branch as a mysterious unseen force pulls a rope leverage system causing their deaths. Eery music sounds throughout and you can instantly tell one is in for a ride of frightening proportions from the word go. A boy who looks ridiculously like a girl experiencing night tremors and crawling out of a cardboard box whilst screaming his gender disguised lungs off. Scorpions, snakes, black dogs, horrifying death sequences, spooky drawings on walls, dead children roaming the halls. Sinister has them all as Ellison throws himself into his work causing a rift between wife Tracy (Juliet Rylance) and disrupting his two kids' lives in the process ultimately putting them all in danger when Ellison discovers the truth surrounding the horrific murders and the missing children.Fear not. There is a small element of light relief here and there. The deputy cop for one, played by James Ransone is a refreshing hilarious character and the family dynamic paired with the overall character interactions are genuinely humorous on more than one occasion. But that's where the light relief stops folks.
Derrickson's Sinister is truly what it says on the tin. Sinister through and through. It's the intelligent man's Paranormal Activity. Oh and just so you know, as I sit here in my dim-lit home-made office (the light-bulb short circuited last night) I am absolutely 100% traumatised by this film. I think I counted six times in which I actually said outloud 'I wanted to go see Anna Karenina' and if I've learnt three things from Sinister it's that a) you should never work from home. B) you should never move house and c) you should never use a projector. Ever.
P.s if anyone ever decides to dress up as the killer featured in this film for halloween and I happen to see you I will have you arrested on the spot. I don't care what I have to do to make it happen. But I'll make sure you see the inside of a prison cell for at least 48 hours.
P.P.S Searching Google images for pictures to coincide with this post...not fun. Not fun at all.
And on that note check out the trailer for Sinister via the clip below...if you must.
