Belfast's West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK closed its Autumn/Winter show on Saturday night, saving the best for last as local talented designers sent their newly created collections down the runway. Ending the week's exciting catwalk events on a level of new height.
One thing I must say is how absolutely fantastic it is to see our local talent develop. Grainne Maher, Una Rodden, David Henderson, Nor Lisa, Ruedi Maguire and Mary Callan all delivered sensational collections and all managed to successfully build on their previous Spring/Summer lines. Pushing forward in both creativity and calibre of design in the process. Whilst newcomers like Sean Henry, Katie Wilson and Stephen Mageen debuted their first offerings for Fashionweek with a phenomenal reception.
There were yells, whistles, screams, clapping and overall, a monumental feel of excitement from all in attendance. With a major emphasis on high-end, eloquent and innovative, futuristic and modern evening-wear, Northern Ireland's talented pool of designers delivered and consequently knocked it out of the park.Three of which stood out from the word go. The first of which was Ruedi Maguire with his clean, chic, sophisticated and feisty gowns, cocktail dresses and statement frocks with an emphasis on contrasting panels. Containing metallic, silk and leather bands prominent throughout. Other details included fringing, lace shouldering and peplum waists with a mixture of classic black and canary yellow shades complete with mesh trains and the odd feathered shoulder. Making Ruedi's garments a personal highlight. Next to make a lasting impression was colourful knitwear designer Mary Callan who showcased eleven out of this world full looks. And by out of this world I mean solar system. Last season Mary delivered full-length knitted dresses with sexy, sultry undertones and form fitting designs. This time around, Mary moved for a stronger, contemporary look for the modern woman to be. Overwhelming silver and metallic pleated skirts and a green faux leather pencil skirt dominated, paired alongside intarsia and space dyed detailing in merino wool fabrics. Mary swapped rust brown, black, white and copper for softer shades with a focus on lemon, baby blue and light grey funky tones. Last but not least to completely smash it on the runway was dark-horse and relatively unknown Katie by Katie Wilson who rocked origami infused dresses and futuristic creations in tremendous fashion. It was by far one of the most impressive collections I have seen, displaying Sports Luxe inspired cowl tops, a parachute blouse and a parachute dress and a mesmerising clay suede jacket. Katie by Katie Wilson literally blew my mind. Other noteworthy mentions go to the Unify Collective studio displaying eye-catching creations from David Henderson. Whose punk, edgy, grunge collection has now moved up in the world with black velvet sleek numbers and a contrasting white and blue cloud print gown. Knitwear and Jersey magic maker Sean Henry unveiled two stunning classic knitted dresses alongside two of his Boy in the Striped Pyjamas collection. Whilst Shauna Fey presented Oscar worthy ball-gowns in black and nude shades in lace, sequin and velvet. Unify showcased the extremely well-made by-products of new state of the art equipment and represented one of the more versatile sections of the evening. Grainne Maher returned for a second night with the sensational new phoenix pendant and arm cuffs. Una Rodden followed suit with her rich and luxurious gowns with Roooi presenting a tropical and exotic take on glamorous gowns with an oriental feel and psychedelic tones. Electric Blue fur anyone? Nor Lisa's Autumn/Winter rocked the house with the only major print-tastic trends complete with a few new creations thrown in including a phenomenal orange lace design. Whilst newcomer Stephen Mageean closed the show with scarlet red cocktail dresses and dark navy panels throughout. A collection which screamed sexy with backless numbers, halter neck collars and fitted jackets extenuating the female form at every opportunity. An Ivory, luxurious bridal gown the perfect piece to close.Designer Night also featured three magical, quirky one-off creations in aid of the Diet Coke Design Award showcasing three up and coming unique designs by Suzanne Ferncombe, Hannah McIlroy and Aine Short. With Suzanne's phenomenal avant garde silver and nude panelled number taking inspiration from Karl Lagerfeld's Diet Coke Design, the 'Love it By Lagerfeld' was a sure-fire favourite to walk away as the triumphant winner.
