The moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. After months of hysterical anticipation, Rihanna debuted her design collaboration with high street giant River Island, entitled ‘Rihanna for River Island’ at London Fashionweek on Saturday. Unfortunately, the collection was every bit of a major let down.
A strong, 90s influence was showcased which was not shocking given Rihanna’s retro, urban infused style. However, the clothes were provocative to the very max creating an overall image of strippers on crack cocaine working street corners. It looked cheap. Tacky and ridiculously skanky.
It wasn’t all bad as certain items could be picked out and worked if they were to be up styled in a trend forward manner. The main standouts being the thigh split maxi skirts and gowns Rihanna is notorious for donning for the likes of red carpet events and impromptu X-Factor performances and the sports luxe inspired crop tops were a nice nod to her Bajan getaways.
Another main issue I have with the lacklustre collection stems from the fact Rihanna’s bold street style has been adopted by high street retailers for quite some time now. River Island’s collection with the singer fails to showcase anything relatively new in terms of what is already easily available. It seems River Island has attempted to cater more for their own customer rather than catching the eye of potential new customers who, like myself, would simply walk right on by their local River Island store.
Fingers crossed the accessories will be the saving grace which will hopefully find their way online come the collection’s official launch March 5. Rihanna is already in the creative process of crafting a Fall line. God help us. As one of my friends and fellow blogger put it “Rihanna doesn’t wear coats. We’re all going to freeze come Autumn/Winter”. Check out Rihanna for River Island’s London Fashionweek launch via the clip below.
