It may be Valentine's Day, but we've got a different kind of love going on right now. The love of all things Hollywood as the Golden Age of Hollywood Glamour makes its way to the QFT this month via the launch of local artist Christine Trueman and her latest body of work, 'Screen Lovers'.
Inspired by the 85th anniversary of the Oscars, Christine's new collection of modern, electric paintings and screen prints will feature silver screen sirens and devilishly handsome leading men in a celebration of Hollywood's greatest. Think Ava Gardner, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn and of course Marilyn Monroe for the iconic ladies whilst Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart do it for the dudes.
Already recognised for her eye-popping iconic portraits of models and movie stars, 'Screen Lovers' reflects Christine’s continued journey and signature mix of simple, definable expressions with bold, highly textural colours. These colours are then infused into compositions which are abstract to varying degrees yet instantly recognisable. Citing Pop art and artists such as Warhol and Lichtenstein as well as local artists, free styler Neil Shawcross and bold texture fan Leo Casement, as her main influences, Christine’s blend of hue and free textured strokes bring a vibrant freshness to her style.
When it comes to Christine’s play on colour, her sophisticated breaking of the rules regarding tonal values reflects her true passion. She comments: “Colour is such an important role in my work, in fact in my life generally. Subtlety has never been my strong point and I'm always attracted to art that ‘shouts’ at me and demands my attention. I spend a long time deciding on individual colours for each piece or series of paintings. How the colours relate to each other is crucial.”
Christine Trueman’s 'Screen Lovers' exhibition launches at a special Oscar themed ‘Oscars Night’ on Sunday 24 February 2013 at 7pm in the QFT, 20 University Square, Belfast with a cocktail reception courtesy of Jameson. The exhibition runs until Friday 8 March.
